Pharmaceutical Industry Profile 2005 - From Laboratory to Patient: Pathways to Biopharmaceutical Innovation
Letter from PhRMA’s President and CEO
PhRMA is pleased to present the 2005 edition of the Pharmaceutical Industry Profile. This year’s Profile focuses on pharmaceutical research and development (R&D), a responsibility that our industry shoulders for much of the world. America’s biopharmaceutical companies are expected to take the lead in defeating crippling and deadly diseases and this demands that we, as an industry, be innovative. With every new breakthrough medicine that we produce, we save lives and improve the quality of life for countless people. The trust we earn from the patients we serve springs from people using our innovative medicines and experiencing how critical our products are to their health.
Every advance in the pharmaceutical field that makes a difference for patients is preceded by years of laboratory work and clinical testing. The public trusts the research scientists who shepherd cuttingedge science onto pharmacy shelves. And this Profile illuminates that process.
R&D culminates in one very human moment. This is the moment between doctor and patient when the doctor lays out the benefits and risks of treatment. Such a moment is private and delicate, full of hope and fear and optimism. Such a moment connects us with our mortality, lays clear our values, and reminds us why we are committed to what we do—helping patients live longer and healthier lives. I am proud that last year, PhRMA member companies invested a record $38.8 billion in researching and developing new medicines—an increase of 12.6 percent over the previous year.
Yet superior science is no longer enough to qualify our hardworking companies as good corporate citizens. A pill cannot help a patient if it remains on a shelf. The industry is now also expected to take the lead in finding ways to expand coverage so that the medications we research and develop are accessible and affordable to all patients. Every time coverage is expanded, we step up to the plate. Our ultimate success lies in defeating disease, and we must work both in the laboratory and in the halls of Congress to achieve this goal.
